THE FLYING TURKEYS (May sessions) In the winter and spring of 1997 Mark Holland (on vocal/guitar) and Local Pedal Steel Player Jack Dickson, Bass Player Jack Herbert and others (heavy in the spirit of the music of Gram Parsons) were playing a lot of music and having lots of fun doing it. So just for the fun of it we booked time at Progressive Studio in Hyde Park Tampa. Joking around and with no name for this group it got dubbed The Flying Turkeys instead of "Hey you guys" The recordings do reflect the atmosphere of just playing music and having fun doing it. Because The Flying Turkey sessions were multi-track recordings, every track from this CD was used from it's original recording (except the instrumental track #5) for the "Still Safe at Home" CD by removing the original Pedal Steel Player (Jack Dickson) and adding Neil Flanz on Pedal Steel. It is interesting to compare the two CD's on these tracks as Jack was playing live with the band and Neil was added years later.
The Porch Pickers - Still Safe At Home A CD featuring the collaboration from 1999 to 2001 of Mark Holland/Julien Robitaille/Walt Leuzinger and well known pedal steel guitarist Neil Flanz has been released. Singer/songwriter ,Walt Leuzinger who also produced and engineered this CD as well as having composed three of the album's original songs including the tribute song to Gram Parsons "Still safe at Home". Also featured is a young talented Canadian friend of Mark's named Julien Robitaille (from Montreal Quebec) whose vocal harmony and guitar work blend together beautifully with Mark's raw, soulful vocals. Julien also sings lead vocals, and are built around Neil Flanz's pedal steel resulting in an album that's sure to please just about everyone whose musical tastes lean toward raw, traditional roots of Americana music. The variety of songs includes everything from the Rolling Stone's "Dead Flowers" and "Wild Horses" to honkeytonk music including "Close up the honkeytonks", Merle Haggard's "Everybody's had the blues", to several Gram Parsons songs including "Juanita" "My Uncle" "Hot Burritto #1", Elvis Costello's "Stranger in the House" , to an old standard by Doc Watson "Way Downtown" as well as two songs by the Blue Yodeler Jimmie Rodgers "Miss the Mississippi and You" and the last song Jimmie ever recorded "15 years ago". Since the summer of 1994 , Pedal steel guitar player Neil Flanz (who toured with Gram Parsons and Emmylou Harris in 1973 ) has been staying each summer since 1994 at Gram's Place to rest, relax and play music. Local musicians/singers from Tampa are Mark Holland, John McEwen, Sam Osborn, Jack Herbert, Jack Dickson, Billy Artlip and John Rogers, David Lane, and Tampa's own blues singer/songwriter WAZ. One song (Hot Burrito # 1) off of this CD was released in Canada in Dec. 99 called NORTHERN STEEL - DEBBO PRODUCTIONS. The Porch Pickers - Dixie Moon How this CD came into being is quite simple really. I was inspired by a talented musician and musicologist (although I doubt if he thinks of himself that way) whose vision of southern roots music rubbed off on me in a very unexpected way. While having the privelege of working as producer/engineer of the "Still safe at Home" CD. I began to be haunted by a mental image of the depression era rural south. This image became most clear when I heard Mark Holland and Julien Robitaille's renditions of the great songs of Jimmie Rodgers. These images along with a move from my former urban home to my current rural residence on the secluded shore of Smokehouse Lake inspired and compelled me to begin an intense period of songwriting that resulted in a group of songs intended to complement the covers that Mark and Julien had done of Jimmie Rodgers material. In my mind those two songs ("Miss the Mississippi and You" and the last song Jimmie ever recorded "Fifteen years ago") became a unified vision of rural southern "Roots Music." What is most remarkable to me is the fact that until our association I had never heard (and of course never written) any music of that style or genre before. I would have to say that it happened as a result of Mark's Magical Musical Osmosis ala Gram's Place. ......Walt Leuzinger email - Wleuz@aol.com As a last word to this story.................Oh the power of the songs of Jimmie Rodgers.
