Gram's Place
Hostel
All you need to know about
Gram's Place
This enterprise started out as a Bed & Breakfast in 1991
and was named in honor of Singer/Songwriter Gram Parsons (1946 - 1973).
Who was Gram Parsons?
Read about his life and his music
on our GP Tribute page.
What is a
Hostel?
First of all: If you need to have this question answered, you will
probably not be comfortable at Gram's Place or any other hostel accommodation
for that matter and you should move on and look for an expensive hotel. :)
Hostels provide inexpensive, safe and clean overnight accommodations.
Most Hostels offer dormitory-style rooms as well as private rooms.
Usually Men & Women sleep in separate rooms, unless the dorm is offered as a
COED dorm, like our train room #9, which can accommodate singles, couples or
families (up to 6 people).
At Gram's Place Linens & Towels are included in the overnight price.
Like many other hostels, Gram's Place offers two fully equipped self-service
kitchens, dining areas (outside only!), secured storage space and common
rooms to socialize with other travelers. (Check out our Amenities for more details!)
- How did Gram's Place come to be?
-
In 1980 Mark Holland founded The Gram Parsons
Foundation to share, perpetuate and educate people about the music of Gram Parsons.
Working four years with John Kravet, Judy Katz, Mark wrote, produced and directed the
1st
Video documentary on Gram Parsons ("The Legend of the Grievous Angel")
for public access Cable in Tampa, on Parsons. Completed in April of 1989.

- The
following November Mark made his first trip to Amsterdam, Netherlands
to receiving the Dutch "Gram Parsons Award" created by Henk Korsten of the Netherlands,
recognizing Gram Parsons as the official God Father of
Country Rock Music.
- Gram's Place was established in 1991 as a result of
that trip to Amsterdam. Impressed by the tolerant nature of Amsterdam Mark set out with a dream.
The idea was to bring all people
together through music. (the international language).
- With only a dream of a place
where all people could gather in the Spirit of "Music" and "Mitakuye
Oyasin" (a native American word which means "We are all related"
Gram's Place was born.
-
-
When a name for this
Hostel/ B&B
was needed, from the beginning "Gram's Place" seemed to fit.
The reality of Gram's Place is that it is not really about Gram Parsons but
what Gram was all about,... 'ROOTS MUSIC" The
dream was
reinforced by many people since 1991. It was the joining of "Spirits"
between Mark Holland and Brenda McClintock. Brenda was
introduced to Gram's Place by a then young music talent named Neal Casal
in 1993, as well as the support of all who have stayed that has
brought Gram's Place to where it is today. Gram's Place may not be for
everyone, but we feel everyone will find it interesting and unique.
-
-
On Jan. 10th 2003 Brenda McClintock passed away. Brenda was all about the
love of music and was a huge force in the beginning and shared the dream of
Gram's Place. She is and will always be missed. We love you Brenda. Your
musical dream is still here.
-
It was the suggestion of a past guest that the quaint brick
walk way connecting the two properties was named "Gram Straat" (Straat is Dutch
for Street.) with street signs making it official.
-
Each room has it's own comment book and
many past guests ideas have been a part of creating this hostel and will continue in the
future.

Amenities Page for more detailed information)
